Hen Wallow Falls

Hen Wallow Falls Hike

For Christmas gifts we do the whole something you want, something you need, something to wear and something to read. This year TJ got new waterproof hiking boots. We do a lot of outside activities in all kinds of weather, and we live on a farm, so these are pretty much a must-have! The weather after Christmas was unseasonably warm, so TJ got to break in his new boots with a hike to Hen Wallow Falls in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Hen Wall Falls is a 90 foot waterfall with plenty of seating around the base, making it a nice place to eat some lunch or catch your breath!

Hen Wallow Falls

The Hen Wallow Falls trailhead is located across from the Cosby Picnic area, at the entrance to Cosby Campground. I would consider the majority of the trail a moderate hike. It is a pretty steady climb for the 2 miles towards the falls. The trail is very rocky with a lot of roots, and it was covered with wet leaves when we hiked. The .2 miles into and out of the falls is the hardest park of the hike. It is an extremely steep downhill towards the falls, making it a tough hike to get back to the main trail.

Hen Wallow Falls

This hike was great for our family with a little guy! We enjoyed the variety of scenery all throughout the hike. There were 3 foot bridges to cross of varying widths which was really cook and the creek they cross is absolutely beautiful! TJ loved seeing the different types of trees and bushes along the trail and some huge rocks just before the turnoff for the falls.

Hiking with Kids

We have found that when hiking with TJ, having a destination is good motivation for him. Waterfalls are his favorite thing to see. We also always pack in water and lots of snacks. A hungry kid is not a happy hiker! I use a lumbar pack and it is perfect for holding everything you need for a short hike. I would also recommend to take your time when hiking with kids. Let them explore and stop when there is something they want to see. Happy hiking memories will make them want to go again!
